Science OLYMPIAD has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to 7,600 teams in 50 states. Science Olympiad's ever-changing line-up of events in all STEM disciplines exposes students to practicing scientists and career choices, and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.

In the fierce competition for higher education, GPA, AP results and general extra curriculars are clearly not enough to enter the ideal university. Unique personal performance and comprehensive ability are the most important factors in college. Science competitions provide students with an opportunity to fully demonstrate themselves, and science medals, special achievements and the social activities and leadership that are derived from them help many students successfully enter the ideal university.
Science competitions contain many different programs。For most people, it seems difficult and far from their own. This is a misunderstanding. In fact, the science competition is by educators and competitions designers for students of all ages, most of whom have competitions to participate in.
From primary school to high school, participation and achievement of success in rigorous competition programs builds confidence and ability within students that enables them to succeed at higher levels of education and in work. This potential exists in all students, and with the help of an experienced mentor students can reach their full potential. With this help, some students can win multiple gold medals in their first year of competition. In addition to their own efforts, many students also benefit from the careful guidance of experienced coaches. Coaches usually discuss the selection of suitable competitions with students based on factors such as competition rules and student's ability and interest, and guide students to pre-match training and preparation according to the rules of the competition provided by the science competition organization. This training, learning, and preparation process is different from general tutorial work. Participation in such competitions is full of fun, curiosity, invention and creation, enthusiasm and eager anticipation to win!
The establishment of students' self-confidence and the cultivation of various abilities are necessary conditions for becoming mature and becoming outstanding and talented young adults, and participation in science competitions is a great opportunity to build towards this goal. Constant awards will enable students to build a full sense of self-confidence and accomplishment, and an enthusiasm for the science competition will encourage students to study hard, become better thinkers, and be willing and unafraid to innovate. In the process of continuous learning and participation, the ability to think carefully, the ability to work and the ability to interact with others will be greatly enhanced. In team-based settings, their achievements, experience, self-confidence and independent thinking ability can easily make their role in a group immeasurably more valuable. This pathway to growth is appreciated and affirmed by many successful parents and is a valuable experience that helps many to succeed at their dream universities.
The experience of participating in science competitions also brings many other opportunities and social activities to students. For example, some students with scientific competition experience use their spare time or summer to organize and use their love, knowledge and time to serve the community, help disabled school students to learn scientific knowledge, and create happy memories through this work. Through these activities, students not only generate more meaningful experiences via social interactions with younger mentees, but demonstrate to the academic and professional world that they are building important skill sets that are valuable in school and in one’s career. Some students are so moved by this work that they feel compelled to give back by participating in the organization and refereeing of science competitions after they go to college, the likes of which are equally meaningful and build a different yet vitally important skill set.

Chinese students are known for their cleverness and good academic performance. But being able to win awards in various science competitions will set them apart from others with similar profiles. For those Chinese students who are not very good at English in the United States, participation in hands-on science competitions is an effective way to demonstrate ability and intellect unrestrained by lingual ability. In recent years, in Science Olympiad competitions in Orange County and other areas of Los Angeles County, many gold medal winners were Chinese immigrant students who came to the United States recently. Many such students have been admitted to Ivy League and other prestigious schools.
Students have the talent and knowledge needed to succeed, but often times they are surrounded by a sea of information and face many difficult and overwhelming choices on how to spend their time most effectively. It is the parent’s role here to help guide them through the process. Parents must help students choose activities that build skill sets and ability, and not waste time on unimportant things. Participation in science competitions is one such effective use of time, and by encouraging students to participate, you can let a child make the most of his imagination, creativity, achieve much in a short time, and enter the ideal university.
